Want Thicker Longer Hair? Use Rice Water

Yep you read that right. I am Filipino, and we eat rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But I’ve never heard of using rice water to help with hair growth. I stumbled upon an article about this the other day, so I did my research and I’m shooketh fam. Stay woke, because this hair trick can save your hair, and stop early grey hairs.

Apparently rice water has been used for decades in China, Japan & Southeast Asia to treat the hair. According to researchers, women in the Heian period (794 to 1185 CE) in Japan had floor-length hair they kept healthy by bathing it in rice water. There’s also a village of women in Huang Luo, China, that has earned the name “Land of Rapunzels” there are women that have hair up to 6 ft long. (!!). And it’s all because of rice water.

According to Great Big Story,

Most Yao women in Huangluo only cut their hair once, in a coming-of-age ceremony at 17. Even then, they save the hair they cut to use later, adding bundles back into a bun when they become mothers. It’s part of a proud tradition the Yao carry on into the modern day, passed from mother to daughter as an inheritance of their unique cultural history. Check out their story here.

What are the benefits of using rice water?

Rice water is rich in starches so it coats the surface of the hair to add strength and moisture as well as provide hydration to the scalp. Inositol is also found in rice water which a carb that repairs and protects your hair even after rinsing. The amino acids help increase hair volume, and keep hair shiny & smooth. While the mix of vitamins & minerals improve hair texture & tame frizz.

Using rice water in your hair is safe and natural, but it is important to add a teaspoon of a natural clarifier (like tea tree oil or apple cider vinegar) to prevent buildup over time.

So how do you use rice water for your hair?

The Soaking Method

Soaking is the easiest and quickest method for making rice water. All you’ll need is uncooked rice (any kind works!), water, a bowl, a strainer and a spray bottle. Plus you can add any essential oil to make it smell better.

Place ½ cup uncooked rice in a bowl and then add 2 to 3 cups warm water. Let it soak for about 30 minutes in the bowl before straining out the rice. Pour the strained water into a spray bottle (or any storage container). 

Apply it to freshly washed hair, leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse out before using conditioner.

The Boiling Method

Place ½ cup uncooked rice in the pot and then add 1 to 2 cups of water. Cook the rice over medium heat until the water starts boiling. Strain the liquid into a spray bottle.

After shampooing, spray (or pour) the rice water onto your hair. Leave it for 5 to 20 minutes, massaging it into your scalp. Rinse it out with regular water.
