I wax my upper lip & chin (Yep, I get stubborn little hairs down there) religiously. (Every 3 weeks to be exact). And I get my eyebrows threaded every 2-3 weeks or so. But I also use mirror that’s double sided. One side is magnified, you know the one that’s magnified x10 times. Well I hate that side. Because I see every single hair of peach fuzz. I was noticing that my foundation just didn’t seem smooth. At first, I tried to change up my primer. Must be my primer right? Nope, my foundation wasn’t sitting on my skin because it was sitting on top of my peach fuzz. So I made an appointment to wax my entire face. I mean I get a Brazilian, wax my arms and upper lip so it couldn’t be that bad, right? NOPE IT F*CKING HURT. It actually was the most painful wax I’ve ever gotten. Especially near my sideburns. I also have sensitive skin. It was as bad as extractions during a facial. So I read up on dermaplaning. I was able to get a deal from Gilt City. I went to Skin Bar in midtown East.
Dermaplaning is a skin care treatment that removes dead skin cells and vellus hair, aka peach fuzz. An aesthetician uses a small, sterile blade while holding the skin taut, swiping the blade in gentle upward motions.
The procedure involves the use of a 10-inch scalpel, which curves into a sharp point. The blade is used on clean, dry skin on the forehead, cheeks, chin, nose and neck. At Skin Bar, they cleansed my face twice (to make sure my skin was super clean) and then put rubbing alcohol to dry it out. That way the razor has the closest shave. (I’m super weird because I love the smell of rubbing alcohol, but it did def make my face feel super tight and dry, which I didn’t really like). It took the aesthetician about 35 minutes to do my face. I did have a few breakouts on my face so she did skip that part (to make sure that bacteria didn’t spread). You can expect to see an instant improvement in skin texture and tone, while the long-term effects are increased cell turnover, fewer wrinkles and dark spots, reduction of acne scarring, and the removal of fine facial hair.
Removing the peach fuzz is beneficial since the fine hairs trap debris and oils and give skin a dull look. After dermaplaning, skin care products and treatments perform much more efficiently since they can penetrate the skin more easily. Your makeup goes on smoother as well. The only thing I didn’t really like is that the package came with a facial afterwards so she did extractions right after. I don”t know why but I was super super sensitive and it was pretty painful for me. Since my skin seemed very sensitive I opted out of the chemical peel. (I usually do lactic 2% peels, and my skin is glowing the next day). She did say to expect breakouts after as part of skin purging.
My face did feel sore, so when I got home, I put one of my hydrating masks in the freezer for 5 minutes and then put it on. It helped calm down my skin.
So what should you know about Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types. People with sun damage, fine lines, very dry skin and dull skin are great candidates. However, since the procedure requires use of a sharp scalpel, those with inflamed acne should pass on it until their complexion clears up.
Dermaplaning will not make your hair grow back thicker or darker. Once your hair begins to grow back it might feel different because the hair was cut straight across, but it’s actually the same texture as before and grows at the same speed. It also just might seem thicker because the hair was bluntly cut by the razor versus having a natural point to it.
You HAVE to wear SPF after You should always wear sun protection every day — especially when you’re outside for a prolonged period of time — but post-exfoliation your skin is especially susceptible to the sun.
It’ll change your life as far as makeup application goes. Makeup will look so much better as it will sit better on top of your skin. Your skincare products will also be more effective, since the product isn’t being blocked by dead skin cells and can penetrate the skin faster.
The results can last up to four weeks. The procedure removes three weeks of dead skin cells, so your glow will last all month long. Your skin is always growing, you’ll need to schedule an appointment every month to maintain your results.
